Temples typically don't grow crops, but this rice paddy has a purpose. The temple uses the rice to make rice cakes for ceremonies.
I'd been to Todaiji several times before, but I couldn't remember having seen this bell tower. You could spend all day exploring the extensive grounds of the temple, not just the Great Buddha Hall.
The inscriptions in black say this hexagonal piece of lighting equipment was repaired in 2016, so not too long ago. I wonder when it was originally crafted.
