One of the two pagodas at Kiyomizu Temple, this vermillion-painted wooden tower is a stunning sight, whether from far away on the downtown streets or right up close like this. Kiyomizu Temple is a bustle of activity during the seasonal illuminations, but you wouldn't know it when you gaze up at the sky and see the spotlight piercing the pitch black of night over the proud pagoda. The illuminations start off with a bang, literally, at 6 o'clock with a dramatic ringing of the temple bell. At that moment, the lights, spotlight and all, switch on simultaneously. Even if you decide not to enter the temple grounds for the illuminations, I recommend making the walk up the mountain slope.
