I don't think the designer of Chionin's illuminations had this angle in mind, but the spotlights pair very nicely with this gate.
I've been experimenting with unusual places to shoot photos at night. Everything was in pitch black silhouette, but fortunately I know where the red leaves are around here. I placed my smartphone on the ground and used its light to illuminate the leaves.
I ventured toward the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Grove under the gibbous moon, which provided all the light around me. I'd never been in such an environment in the city before. It was unnerving, yet great fun!
